In a classroom that serves as a functioning full-service salon, students will develop all the skills required to work in a professional salon by using facial machines, styling stations, and manicure tables. Every Thursday and Friday, this salon is open to the public, giving teenagers the opportunity to use their skills on men, women, and children.
 
All states require beauty salon operators to be licensed, and seniors in this course may begin to accumulate hours toward the New York State license.
 
Students will learn a number of skills in a wide variety of areas, including:
 
• hair shaping, styling, coloring, and straightening
• thermal curling, finger waving, and cold waving
• perms and relaxants
• barbering
• extensions
• makeup art and skin care
• manicures and pedicures
• salon management and professional ethics
• safety and sanitation
 
Young stylists will also learn:
 
• texturing
• shingling, slithering, and frosting
• streaking and lightening hair
• precision hair cutting
• high-frequency and galvanic current facials

Course Available: Grade 11
Course Length: 2 years
Placement: Regular
Credits: Up to 4 CTE credits a year
Admissions Criteria: Students must demonstrate good fine motor dexterity
