In this course, students will research, practice, plan, and guide a variety of activities for children. They will gain an understanding of the principles of child growth and development, design safe and healthful learning environments, and take steps to advance the physical, social, intellectual, and emotional development of children.

During this course, students will learn the fundamental aspects of how a child  develops and prepare for entry-level employment in early childhood programs. At the same time, they will fulfill the 120-hour requirement of formal child care education necessary to apply for certification as a Child Development Associate (CDA). This course may also be used toward the 480 hours of experience working directly with children in group settings required for CDA certification. Upon graduation from high school, students 18 or older are eligible to apply for CDA certification. This application is made independently by the student at his or her own expense.

Certified CDAs-in-training will learn how to:

• maintain professionalism

• observe and record behavior

• establish an effective program operation
