In this course, students will develop the practical skills needed to conduct both light and heavy-duty repairs on automobile frames. Young mechanics will use up-to-date electronic and hydraulic test equipment to precisely diagnose today’s sophisticated cars. Teens will develop basic hand skills, practice the proper use of tools, and learn automotive theory and science in a practical context. Students will repair actual customers’ cars, and possibly even their own.
 
Students will work on the chassis and frame, which include: 
 
drum and disc brakes
hydraulics
steering and suspension
 
They will also work with the power plant, which includes:
 
cooling, exhaust and fuel systems
• fuel injectors
electronic ignitions
 
Mechanics-in-training will:
 
• examine electrical systems
• work with circuits and instruments
• diagnose engine computers

Course Available: Grade 11
Course Length: 2 years
Placement: Regular
Credits: Up to 4 CTE credits a year
Admissions Criteria: Strong reading and math skills, as well as good gross and fine motor coordination
